Centre Point: Let’s do nog

The Vernon Performing Arts Centre's Brian van Wensem shares his new holiday expression with readers.

Each Christmas, my wife and I find and collect one or two unique tree ornaments as we’re going about our seasonal shopping.

This year’s big find came from a store full of trinkets. This particular coaster-sized decoration simply features three giant initials “LDN” followed by three corresponding and all-encompassing words: “Let’s Do Nog.”

It’s a quirky and fun little saying that so appropriately matches the season. Gathering for eggnog, baking and chocolates is a decadent way of celebrating that the big day is drawing near.

“Let’s Do Nog” has become my motto this December and with only two weeks to go and advent calendars emptying day by day, don’t let the season pass you by without indulging in some of the sumptuous events that, like eggnog, will really satisfy and enrich your holiday.

The Nutcracker is among the most popular of all ballets and is coming to the Performing Arts Centre this coming weekend.

Ballet Kelowna and the Generation II Dance Society are presenting this holiday classic; enjoyed in theatres throughout the world.

Tchaikovsky’s timeless compositions are the perfect backdrop for the graceful choreography and movement, making The Nutcracker a favourite Christmas tradition.

Choose from the evening performance Friday, Dec. 16 at 7:30 p.m., or the Saturday, Dec. 17 matinee at 2 p.m. Tickets are available through the Ticket Seller by calling 549-SHOW (7469).

Don’t miss your chance to see It’s Snowing on Saltspring at Powerhouse Theatre.

It’s a bit of a dark Christmas comedy highlighting dysfunction, fears, doubts and wisecracks that work their way into an overcrowded home during the holidays.

The play runs now through Dec. 18, with evening performances starting most nights at 8 p.m. Complete showtimes and information can be found by visiting the Ticket Seller at www.ticketseller.ca or calling 549-SHOW (7469).

Caravan Farm Theatre’s Winter Sleigh Ride show is now in full swing until New Year’s Eve. Bundle up tight for the story of The Gift Horse as you’re swept across the scenic and serene acres of Caravan Farm with scenes being played throughout.

Some of the performances are filling up quickly, so be sure to book your tickets early to avoid disappointment. Visit www.ticketseller.ca for an up-to-date list of available shows to choose from.

Twice Juno Award-winning Greg Sczebel returns to the Vernon stage for a performance full of Christmas favourites and his own festive hits.

Simply Having A Wonderful Christmastime also features the talents of Raquel Warchol and Jon Buller for an evening full of holiday cheer.

Showtime is at 7:30 p.m. at the Powerhouse Theatre Wednesday, Dec. 21. Tickets are on sale now through the Ticket Seller at 549-SHOW (7469).

May you find your yuletide joy this season, do some nog, and enjoy the shows!
