Wow, it’s September already. On paper, I should have been better prepared but with so little sunshine throughout the last few months, I really didn’t see this one coming.
Despite changing my calendar over, I remain utterly convinced there are still a few more weeks of summer fun to be had.
It might be best for me to take this Labour Day to realign my sense of time and space. In the meantime, I recommend checking out some of the exciting upcoming series, seasons and subscriptions that are on sale now through the Ticket Seller box office.
The Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre Society has just launched season subscription packages for theatre, dance and kids presentations.
The season kicks off Oct. 1 with swing and show band The Ford Seven playing three decades of favourite swing, blues, jazz and show tunes.
Oct. 2 is the official start of the centre’s kids’ series as Vancouver returns to Vernon for their take on Hansel and Gretel.
Last year’s production of Cinderella was a hit with beautiful costumes and sets. Hansel and Gretel is full of comical characters and added surprises to entertain and ignite imagination.
The 2011/2012 dance series starts up Oct. 15 with Mascall Dance’s The White Spider. Based on Heinrich Harrer’s book of the same name, five dancers will climb, rappel and dance the walls and ceiling of a set that shifts and changes like the abstract face of a mountain.
Lastly, the centre’s theatre series starts up Nov. 11 as Arts Club Theatre brings Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story to stage.
The first half of the production tells the story of the legend who changed popular music forever. The second half is a nostalgic tribute concert featuring all of your favourite Buddy Holly hits.

The North Okanagan Community Concert Association, the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra, and the Powerhouse Theatre’s new seasons are also now online and most single tickets are now on sale. With first choice of seating, don’t miss out on the best time of year to buy your tickets!
And with autumn fast approaching events are starting to pop up on the calendars of your favourite local theatres:
Red Green, one of Canada’s most recognizable comedy icons, duct tape extraordinaire and Possum Lodge’s favourite handyman, is set to take to stage at the Performing Arts Centre for his Wit and Wisdom Tour Sept. 15.
It’s a rare opportunity to spend an evening with this incredible humourist and best-selling author Steve Smith whose burly-yet-clumsy character has made him a champion for underachieving men everywhere.
Showtime is 7 p.m. and you can call the Ticket Seller at 549-SHOW (7469) for tickets.
Peter Karrie played the part of Phantom of the Opera from London to Toronto, Vancouver and even Hong Kong. Widely regarded as one of the best-ever stage phantom’s, his voice has been featured in many other contemporary musical theatre hits including Les Miserables, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Evita.
On Sept. 17 starting at 7:30 p.m., Karrie will be on stage at the Powerhouse Theatre for A Phantom Returns. He’ll be joined on stage by Melina Moore and students from the Valley Vocal Arts Studio for this evening of musical theatre. Tickets are on sale now through the Ticket Seller by calling 549-SHOW (7469).
Enjoy the shows!
