Centre Point: Spring has sprung for Vernon’s arts/culture scene

Like waking flowers, all sorts of events are springing up in Vernon the next two weeks.

This past Thursday I noticed the tulips are just starting to emerge from the flower beds at the Performing Arts Centre.

With the recent nightly snowfalls, I was rather surprised to see this first sign of spring –– just in time, since the first “official” day of the season is supposedly this Tuesday. Alas, these are theatre tulips, so of course, “the show must go on.”

Like the sudden appearance of waking flowers, all sorts of events are happening right on schedule in the next two weeks, so don’t miss out!

Bagpipes, authentic Celtic drumming, dance, rich vocal and choral arrangements are on the program tonight at the Performing Arts Centre as Cod Gone Wild takes centre stage in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day.

This year they’ll be joined on stage by the Coldstream School Choir and the Argyll Highland Dancers and Celtic Choir.

Tickets are still available for tonight’s performance through the Ticket Seller website at www.ticketseller.ca or at the door within one hour of the 7 p.m. showtime.

Tomorrow night is the Ed Sullivan Caravan of Stars tribute concert at the Performing Arts Centre.

There are seven performers ready to pay homage to Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eddie Cochran, the Everly Brothers, the Big Bopper, Ricky Nelson and Johnny Cash.

Larry Merchison as Ed Sullivan hosts the acts who are accompanied by the Memphis Beats Band to play more than 30 top-10 hits from the ‘50s.

The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are on sale through the Ticket Seller at 549-SHOW (7469).

This Thursday, March 22 starting at 8 p.m., the Western Canada Theatre Company is in town for UBUNTU (The Cape Town Project.)

This dramatic and mysterious tale is beautifully told through spirited storytelling, music and dance.

The play was originally developed as an international collaboration in Cape Town, South Africa and features Canadian and South African actors. The title, “ubuntu”, in South Africa means the belief that all of humanity is connected in the spirit of community.

Call the Ticket Seller at 549-SHOW (7469) for tickets.

Saturday, March 31, the Performing Arts Centre will host The Other Guys Theatre Company for their performance of Good Timber: Songs and Stories of the Western Logger.

It’s a show that honours the golden age of logging in the Pacific Northwest with songs based on the logger poetry of Robert E. Swanson.

The folk music and stories are backed by rarely-seen photos and video footage, drawn from the B.C. Archives, reminding us of an era where loggers climbed trees and had a language all their own.

The show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are for sale through the Ticket Seller at 549-SHOW (7469).

Also on March 31 is Shirley Valentine at the Powerhouse Theatre.

Nicola Cavendish comes to Vernon for this benefit performance of her signature role of Shirley: jumping from an unhappy marriage to embark on the adventure of a lifetime.

There are two performances to choose from: March 31 starting at 8 p.m. and a matinee on Sunday, April 1 starting at 2 p.m. Tickets are on sale through the Ticket Seller by calling 549-SHOW (7469).

Enjoy the shows!
