Christmas is the theme for the second concert of the ongoing Chamber Music Series at St. Saviour’s Anglican Church.
A Christmas Celebration features lyric coloratura soprano Tracy Fehr as the guest soloist, performing a selection of seasonal favourites including pieces from Handel’s Messiah, as well as popular carols like O Holy Night. Musical accompaniment will be provided by Christine Purvis on organ and Tracy Pratt Stuchbery on piano.
Fehr has performed with the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra, the University of Alberta Symphony Orchestra and at the British Embassy in Tunisia.
Last year, the first Chamber Music Series included concerts with flautist Antonia Mahon and pianist Glen Montgomery, among others.
“We originally thought of having a chamber music series as a way of opening up the church to the public and providing a stage for local performers,” said Rev. Mike Stuchbery, the rector at St. Saviour’s. Attendance has been great so far, he said, with the concerts drawing a range of community members.
Still, Stuchbery is hoping the crowds will grow. The concert series is also a way of building the church’s musical instrument fund for upkeep on their piano and pipe organ, which is one of very few in the Okanagan.
The concert takes place on Dec. 4, starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $18 for adults, $10 for youth and children 12 and under are free. Tickets can be purchased from the Penticton Academy of Music, Lifesong Records & Books or at the door on the evening of the show.
