Cheech and Chong light up South Okanagan fans

Cheech and Chong's O Cannibas tour on stage at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

The world’s iconic purveyors of pot had them rolling in the aisles and just about everywhere else in and around the South Okanagan Events Centre (SOEC) Wednesday night.

Richard “Cheech” Marin and Tommy Chong, along with backup from Shelby Chong, Tommy’s wife of 35 years, dished up some comedic and musical delights within the odorous confines of the SOEC as part of their O Cannibas Tour.

Shelby, not looking anywhere close her reported age of 71, opened the show with a raunchy recollection of the past, including her first acid trip in a grocery store and the vegetable shoes she found there, and later ate.

She also talked about her longtime marriage to Tommy, describing her husband at his current age as being “like a fine wine…” the last part of the description unfit to print.

She then introduced the pair to the delight and cheers of the crowd and the three sat and talked about their lives together including their movie and television performances, Tommy’s jail time and even the infamous breakup of Cheech and Chong.

When Shelby asked the men why they split up the act, Tommy replied they got rich.

“And how do you get a rich Mexican to work?” he asked.

About Tommy’s time in at the Taft Correctional Institution for conspiracy to distribute drug paraphernalia when asked how many times Cheech went to his partner in jail, the answer was “once.”

The reason why just a single visit apparently had to do with the bodily inspection by prison officials

From there the pair re-visited their musical roots, including hard rocker Cheech dressed up in a pink tutu along with some of their skits, including the hilarious car scene from their blockbuster movie Up in Smoke.

They’re last Canadian stop is Thursday in Abbotsford before heading south for six November stops in the United States.
