Combining burlesque, comedy and a whole lot of glitter, cult sensation Star Wars Burlesque: A Nude Hope is coming to the Chilliwack Cultural Centre.
On Nov. 16, acclaimed fandom theatre troupe Geekenders will pull out all the stops as they playfully create a two-act parody of a sci-fi classic. With tasteful striptease, wacky comedy, puppets, custom-made costumes, thousands of rhinestones, and fifteen of Canada’s most well-known burlesque performers, GeekEnders will tell the story of the first Star Wars movie in a completely new light.
Star Wars burlesque has become a staple of entertainment in Vancouver, earning Geekenders a cult following that leads to constantly sold-out shows. From Victoria, Sechelt, Kelowna, Wells, Whitehorse and more, 40,000 people have seen this Star Wars parody. With a mission to show the world that being sexy comes from within yourself, and that everybody is sexy in some way, it’s not hard to see why this body positive group has become so well loved.
While an admiration for Star Wars allows an audience to appreciate the content of the show, the true beauty comes from how the show can take artistic license on the characters and even modernize some aspects. Why shouldn’t R2-D2 have female pronouns? Why shouldn’t Chewbacca? Why can’t the characters have different body types or sexualities? Geekenders challenges fans to think of their media critically and in a more open-minded way. This leads to an incredibly empowering show, rich in diversity and thrumming with a body positive message.
Star Wars Burlesque: A Nude Hope is coming to the Chilliwack Cultural Centre on Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 for adults, $32 for seniors and $30 for youth and can be purchased at the Centre Box Office, online at www.chilliwackculturalcentre.ca, or by calling 604-391-SHOW(7469).
