Bring your family to the Cultural Centre on Saturday, October 1 and be prepared to engage your hands, feet, eyes, ears and sense of wonder for a full day of participatory arts activities. There will be live performances, music and classes that you can take part in, games, community art creation, and much more.
As a collaborative, Canada-wide volunteer movement, the first annual Culture Days event swept across more than 700 Canadian cities and towns in 2010, generating an extraordinary amount of enthusiasm in the process. These designated days aim to raise the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities.
This year, Chilliwack will be added to the roster of Culture Days’ events, debuting, Cultural Collaboration-Anniversary Celebration. Through the partnership of the Chilliwack Academy of Music, Chilliwack Community Arts Council, Chilliwack Arts & Cultural Centre Society, Chilliwack Visual Artists Association (CVAA), Chilliwack Players Guild, Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra, and British Columbia Registered Music Teachers Association, this event will present a free day of arts and culture activities.
Highlights of the day include the CVAA hosting an “Artist Village” where a number of artists will be working in a variety of media from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Also on the schedule is the Chilliwack Academy of Music’s Dixieland Band that made its spectacular debut at last year’s Faculty Showcase Concert, and the Academy’s community choirs: Festival Chorus and the new and improved kid’s choir, Tayosei.
Families with young children (babies to preschool) can enjoy a complimentary Kindermusik class with Ms. Marlene in the Toddler Studio. Adults can get a sneak peak at two of the Academy’s upcoming classes: Ukulele Club and a Singer-Songwriter’s Symposium. Seniors can enjoy an hour-long Music Appreciation class with Principal Graham Yates. School-aged children may enjoy a hands-on experience at the “Instrument Playground” generously run by Tom Lee Music. And everyone is welcome to experience a free music lesson with an Academy teacher in one of the Academy’s 18 upstairs studios.
