Choir sings spring songs in Nanaimo

NANAIMO - A Capella Plus performs at the Nanaimo Port Theatre Saturday (April 30).

The human voice is versatile.

It can imitate the sound of a banjo, drums or the subtle flutter of a butterfly wing.

“The human voice is an absolutely amazing instrument,” said Linda Dier, concert chairwoman of A Cappella Plus’ upcoming concert To the Shady Woods: Nature and Love. “You experiment until you get that right sound.”

Choir members will imitate numerous sounds with their voices during the concert.

The concert is Saturday (April 30) at 2 p.m. in the Port Theatre’s lobby.

Dier said the lobby provides a more intimate setting, like a salon-style show.

Refreshments will be available for purchase. During the intermission attendees can mingle and talk with choir members.

Songs featured revolve around the theme of love and nature.

“It’s an appreciation of where we live. We are doing a lot of music that talks a lot about the beauty of trees and wildlife,” said Dier. “We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world and we are celebrating that.”

The love songs explore the many emotions associated with it including anger, happiness and sadness.

Dier said there are some surprises during the concert. Members are trying out some new techniques.

The concert program includes songs such as Blue Green Water, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Unchained Melody and Abendlied.

“It brings tears to your eyes it’s so beautiful,” said Dier about the song Abendlied.

The song To the Shady Woods is about little elves hopping around the woods. Dier said the song makes a lot of the choir members chuckle and she hopes it makes audience members have a laugh too.

The group has chosen a wide variety of music for the performance and hope attendees enjoy it.

“We love to entertain,” said Dier.

Tickets are $23 and are available by calling 250-754-8550, www.porttheatre.com or www.acappellaplus.ca.
