Singers and choirs from all over the world have gathered in Powell River for the biennial Kathaumixw Festival, and a pair of those choirs are headed to Parksville to perform.
As part of the Kathaumixw Island tour (taking place after the festival itself which runs July 3-7), Ad Una Corda from Slovakia and Echology from Australia will head to Parksville on July 10 for a concert at Knox United Church starting at 7 p.m.
Ad Una Corda from Pezinok, Slovakia, comes from an association that dates back to 1867.
Focused on popularizing church music, the choir has toured 15 European countries, Israel and the U.S.A., and has also released two CDs.
The choir is made up of a diverse range of ages and genders.
Echology is a chamber choir from the University of Newcastle in Australia, and brings together UoN staff, students and community members.
The choir has a varied repertoire, and has won various national and international competitions. The choir has released eight CDs.
The Parksville concert runs as a fundraiser for the Parksville and District Community Choir, said the organizer for this leg of the Island tour, Carolyn Hately.
Of the concert, she said, “Music is an international language… When you bring together groups of people from different countries, their communication becomes melded through music,” which is what happens at Kathaumixw and during the tour.
She added that the Parksville concert ends with both choirs singing together.
Tickets for the concert at Knox are $18 for adults, $10 for students, while those under 12 are free. They can be purchased at Mulberry Bush bookstores, or at the door.
