The Surrey Children’s Choir, Chamber Choir and Youth Chorus will present a special anniversary program this Saturday (May 19) at 7 p.m. at The Bell Centre for the Performing Arts (6250 144 St.)
Looking Back/Looking Forward: Celebrating 20 Years of Song will blend typical choral fare with fully staged and choreographed pieces from such popular musicals as Kiss Me Kate, Mary Poppins, West Side Story, Les Miserables and Beauty and the Beast.
Another highlight of the show will be the Chamber Choir’s singing of Polish composer Krystoff Penderecki’s Benedictus – one of the first performances of the piece in Western Canada.
The Surrey Children’s Choir junior group will be showcased in a performance of Edelweiss from The Sound of Music, while the intermediate and senior groups will perform some of the pieces that scored category wins at the recent Fraser Valley Kiwanis Music Festival.
To top off the anniversary, current members of the three choirs will be joined by a chorus of alumni from past years performing some of their favourite material, including Oscar Peterson’s Hymn To Freedom.
Tickets are $23, or $18 for seniors and students, at the door.
