Twelve local artists exhibited their work over four downtown Vanderhoof locations for the Christmas Art Walk on Dec. 3.
Christine Friedrichsmeier, better known as Keena in her painting sign-offs — “My last name alone is 15 letters” — displayed her acrylic series of aspen paintings that each incorporate a secret message. A zoologist by training, Friedrichsmeier also exhibited an animal oil painting series, where she forewent the paint brush for a palette knife.
“I used only red, yellow, and blue to mix all my colours,” she said. “When using a palette knife, you can get really clean colours and the painting seems more alive without painting every hair.”
Claire Singleton of Endako exhibited her on-location paintings of Prince Rupert that were created this summer and recently featured in the Museum of Northern B.C.
The Art Walk’s youngest contributor is 12-year-old Siobhan Klassen. “I started painting when I was about 10 years old. I was so into art that I took over our ping pong table to house all my art samples,” writes Klassen in her letter of introduction. “My artistic style was inspired by reading the book ‘Brave intuitive painting’ by Flora Bowley. When I ran out of canvas I paint on whatever I can find in my dad’s scrapbook box.”
