Members of Nanaimo’s arts and culture community are getting financial support from the city.
On Jan. 29 the City of Nanaimo announced in a press release that it is now welcoming applications for its new 2021 resilience grant. The grant offers one-time payments of $1,000 to $5,000 to members of the local arts and culture sector and is designed to support projects and events taking place in 2021, as well as efforts to respond and adapt to COVID-19.
“The program is intended to help recipients navigate changes resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, while supporting local initiatives that contribute to the stability of the arts and culture ecosystem, help with community resiliency, create public value and take advantage of emerging opportunities,” noted the release.
The groups and individuals must be Nanaimo-based and their applications will be judged on artistic merit, community impact, feasibility and demonstrated need.
In the release, city culture and events manager Julie Bevan said that while the COVID-19 pandemic has been a time of hardship and uncertainty, “it’s also been a time of learning, creativity and opportunity.”
“To support artists and organizations as they navigate change and make the most of new opportunities, this program prioritizes projects that build administrative and/or creative capacity, activities that pursue goals of equity, diversity, accessibility and inclusion, and outcomes linked to community wellness and prosperity,” she said in the release.
The deadline to apply is March 1 at midnight. For more information and to apply for the grant, click here.
