The Comox Valley Youth Music Centre is widening its sphere of influence through a gala fundraiser on Saturday.
Strings and winds director, John Littlejohn, select students and more will be entertaining patrons with the familiar and the fun. The proceeds are earmarked for three wind students from St. James Music Academy in Vancouver, where at-risk kids are shown a “doorway to a better world” through after school music programs. St James (sjma.ca) is Vancouver’s answer to the life changing El Sistema that has taken thousands of Venezuela’s poverty-stricken youngsters off the streets and given them a musical heritage.
The evening will be enriched with desserts by Grains Bakery, coffee, tea and a silent auction. The event starts at 7 p.m. at St. John the Divine Anglican Church on Fifth Street in Courtenay, Saturday May 30. Doors open at 6:30 pm to give everyone a chance to bid on the auction items. Bidding will also be open through the intermission. Tickets are $30 and will be available at the Laughing Oyster Bookstore in Courtenay, the Blue Heron in Comox and online at cymc.ca
