Comedians share views on booze and boys in Parksville

The event is called Live, Laugh, Drink Wine and tickets are $69 for Monday's show

Something new and fun is coming to The Beach Club Resort.

Two of the country’s top comics will be bringing their stand-up routines to Parksville for a night of wine, food and laughs on September 29.

Comedians Jen Grant and Erica Sigurdson, who are good friends, both love red wine and they will share their hilarious points of view on booze, boys and relationships at an event called Live, Laugh, Drink Wine.

Grant and Sigurdson have both been nominated for a Canadian Comedy Award and have appeared on multiple televised stand-up specials.

Regulars on CBC Radio’s The Debaters, the comedians have both had the honour of entertaining Canadian troops overseas.

Sigurdson brought some laughs to soldiers in Kandahar, Afghanistan and Grant to troops stationed in the Middle East.

Sigurdson said her first exposure to stand-up was watching Johnny Carson and while she didn’t decide right at the moment to be a comic, the seed had been planted in her seven-year old mind.  After watching the comedian perform, she wrote her first joke: “What can a person in a wheelchair never be?  A stand-up comic.”

She said as a kid she was always cheeky.

“I always thought I was funny,” she admitted and agreed laughing is the best.

Now a dominating force in the Canadian comedy scene, her comedy festival credits include Montreal’s Just For Laughs, Winnipeg, Halifax, St. John’s, Moncton, P.E.I., Sudbury and Vancouver comedy festivals.

The funny lady who just finished working as a story editor on season one of the CBC comedy Mr. D. has been delivering laughs on stages across the country for 14 years.

Based in Vancouver she enjoys poking fun at yoga gear wearing Vancouverites as well as her friends with kids who are constantly telling her that the sound of a child laughing is the best sound on earth.

“Honestly?  The best sound?  Have you ever heard the sound a cork makes when it finally pops out of red wine?”

Sharing anecdotes about her own life including wearing Spanx and poking fun at husbands obsessed with sports stats, her material generates howls.

“One of my new and most favourite bits centres around when I first discovered drinking wine at home.  Everything looks good after a few glasses of wine and eventually you will order a fridge kid off of the TV.  Sometimes I order a bunch of Groupons.”

She said while men are welcome to attend the show it is geared toward making women laugh.

Dinner, which features award winning wines from the See Ya Later Ranch in the Okanagan, is at 6 p.m. and the show is at 8 p.m. Tickets are $69 and can be purchased at The Beach Club Resort or directly through event coordinator Jennifer Wood at 250-947-2101.
