Have you ever thought it might be fun to sing in a group, but were hesitant to try? Here’s your chance to give it a go with like-minded people of the male persuasion. The Celebration Singers Choirs welcome Walter Martella to the Comox Valley to lead a men’s singing workshop at the Little Red Church on Sunday, Aug. 25, from 2-4 p.m. The workshop is open to men of all ages and singing experience, from shower singers to seasoned choristers. Admission is by donation.
Martella is a working musician and recording artist with an extensive background in both instrumental and choral music. He has led many choirs, including the 40-man men’s choir, Chor Musica, in Powell River. Martella is the artistic director of the Powell River Academy of Music and the bi-annual International Choral Kathaumixw. However, do not be intimidated by his wealth of experience. Martella has promised to make his introductory workshop accessible to novice singers and those with a broad singing background.
In this, the Celebration Singers’ third annual men’s singing workshop, Martella will review important singing techniques, take the group through exercises to warm up the voice and body for singing, and work with the group on a variety of music well suited to the male voice. Perhaps at the end of the workshop you will consider joining one of The Celebration Singers Choirs, or one of the many choral or singing groups in the Comox Valley or beyond. Or, you may choose to return to your shower, and sing with more skill and enthusiasm.
Comox Valley musician Sean Mooney will support Martella on the keyboards.
Registration begins at 1:30 p.m. at the Little Red Church, 2182 Comox Ave., Comox on Sunday, Aug. 25. Further details at www.celebrationsingers.ca ; www.facebook.com/celebration.ca or contact Bob Udell, Celebration Singers, rbtudell@gmail.com; ph. 780-740-5477.
