The Comox Valley Concert Band presents an afternoon of international music. Sponsored by the Evergreen Club, Around the World in Eighty Minutes takes place Sunday, Dec. 3 at 2 p.m. in the Florence Filberg Centre.
The 50 piece wind ensemble under the direction Denise Marquette performs music familiar to every ear, music that carries you around the globe with samples of the world’s greatest hits. From Scotland’s Road to the Isles though Brazil’s Girl from Ipanema to Italy’s Sole Mio and Austria’s Radetzky March, these tunes will awaken your heart and set your toes to tapping. Not to mention a medley of Hootenanny favourites from America’s folk tradition. Row the boat ashore, anyone?
The concert will feature nonagenarian Doug Howell’s euphonium solo, Andaluza, a work by Spanish composer Enrique Granados. Howell, a former Naden Band original member (1942- 1945) has played with the CVCB for almost 30 years.
The concert is not without some festive favourites as well. An arrangement of the 17th century French carol, Bring a Torch, and the haunting Huron Carol, Twas in the Moon of Wintertime, will set the mood for this advent season. The concert finale, the brassy Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah, promises to lift the rafters and raise the roof.
Around the World in Eighty Minutes is music for the entire family at affordable prices. Adults are $5. Children under 12 are free. Come support live music in the Comox Valley on Dec. 3.
