The Evergreen Club is presenting the Comox Valley Concert Band’s seasonal performance Sunday, Dec. 9 at 1 p.m. in the Florence Filberg Centre in Courtenay.
Always in Style traces music through the ages, music that continues to be played and enjoyed despite the passage of time and the changing of fashion. The band under the direction of Denise Marquette has selected time honoured scores that range from suites to folk songs.
Gustav Holst’s Second Suite will be featured along with his contemporary, Ralph Vaughn Williams’ Flourish for Wind Band.
The unmistakable sound of the Big Band era swings and sways through a tribute to Frank Sinatra, and Disco rules in a pulsating arrangement of Abba tunes.
The genre of marches is well represented with military styles from Spain and Belgium’s musical heritage.
And there are always a few surprises.
Rumour has it that the trombone section may have a gem to share but their lips are sealed, (but not while they play, we hope). Plus some seasonal favourites add a little frosting to the top of a full afternoon of music.
What would a winter concert be without a few Portraits of Christmas, a carol and a musical snowstorm?
All this presented with warmth and, of course, plenty of style.
Tickets at the door are $8 for the concert and complimentary tea, courtesy of the Evergreen Club. Children under 12 are free.
Note our earlier start time of 1 p.m. Doors open at 12:30 p.m.
