World-renowned violinist Canadian David Gillham and Japanese pianist Chiharu Iinuma will perform as part of Langley Community Music School’s (LCMS) Concerts Café Classico series, with coffee and commentary, on Feb. 26.
Taking place at 2:30 p.m., the concert will feature two great masterpieces for violin and piano: early 20th century Italian composer Ottorino Respighi’s sonorous Violin Sonata; and early 19th century German composer Felix Mendelssohn’s romantic F Major Sonata.
“Respighi is a composer who writes with rich and evocative harmonies and melodies. His violin sonata is very Brahmsian in character and mood,” said LCMS artistic director Elizabeth Bergmann.
“And the Mendelssohn sonata is a virtuosic work with concerto-like elements for both the violin and the piano.”
Gillham, who plays a Carlo Tononi violin made in 1725 Venice, is the winner of multiple awards and has performed throughout North America, Europe and Asia. He is currently an assistant professor of violin at the University of British Columbia.
Iinuma has also performed throughout the world and has been broadcast on NHK and CBC radio networks. She has been a collaborator at the world’s most prestigious music competitions, including the Tchaikovsky and Queen Elizabeth, Leonard Rose Competitions, as well as the inaugural Isaac Stern Chamber Music Workshop at Carnegie Hall in New York. Iinuma is currently on the piano faculty at the Vancouver Academy of Music and Vancouver Symphony Orchestra School of Music.
“We are honoured to welcome these two distinguished musicians to our concert hall,” said Bergmann.
“The Gillham-Iinuma Duo are wonderful and sensitive performers, and the audience is in for a real treat.”
Tickets are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $10 for students.
