North Island College and the North Island College Faculty Association are very pleased to present two fun and interactive evenings of theatre when Theatre for Living performs Corporations in Our Heads in both Campbell River and Comox Valley later this week.
Messages from corporations tell us hundreds of times a day, in ways we may not notice anymore, how to relate to each other and to ourselves; what to buy, how to feel, how to perceive and the kind of person to aspire to be.
Theatre for Living’s Director, and event facilitator, David Diamond uses stories which emerge from the audience, combined with audience-interactive theatre techniques to become aware of and to explore these messages, and to change our relationships to them.
The intent of Corporations in Our Heads is to be more than just investigation. By making each event relevant, at a grassroots level, to each unique community, local organizers can use the momentum to move forward on local community issues. Each production is the community’s creation, as the whole evening of theatre emerges from the audience.
In bringing Corporations in Our Heads to the region, event organizers sought to explore issues of relevance to the community using an innovative and unique approach, to generate opportunities for change on the part of students and the greater community, and to create stronger connections and partnerships between the community and the college.
NIC instructor, and member of the organizing committee, Naomi Watts, states “This is certainly a creative approach to learning and promoting action, while also sending a message that learning can be an enjoyable challenge and is not just restricted to traditional book learning.”
Watts, who has studied with Theatre for Living, adds, “As a student, I have been deeply impacted by my experience in David Diamond’s theatre training. Simply put, he is an excellent and engaging facilitator.”
Corporations in Our Heads will be performed:
• October 24 at 7:00 pm in the Theatre at NIC’s Campbell River campus (1685 South Dogwood Street);
• October 25 at 7:00 pm in the Stan Hagen Theatre at NIC’s Comox Valley campus (2300 Ryan Road, Courtenay).
