The Cowichan Consort Orchestra begins its 26th season on Friday, Nov. 4 with two symphonies: Schubert’s First and Beethoven’s Seventh.
The idea, according to conductor Robert Mari, is to present a pair of symphonies that audience members can enjoy on a relaxing Friday evening after a long week of work.
Schubert wrote his first symphony at age 16 and four of the movements were influenced by Beethoven’s early symphonies, while including the orchestration style of Mozart and Haydn.
Beethoven’s Seventh, a favourite of many music lovers, was first performed in Vienna in 1813, the same year Schubert actually wrote his First Symphony.
Beethoven’s melodies are “beautiful, joyous and uplifting,” according to orchestra publicist Joy Ann Bannerman.
At the premiere of the piece, the second movement was given an encore right on the spot. Beethoven often called it his best work.
Tickets are available at Volume One Bookstore, from orchestra members, and at the door.
The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Christian Reformed Church at 930 Trunk Rd. in Duncan.
Adult tickets are $15 each with students 17 and under admitted for $10.
