Cowichan Valley songwriter makes mark on compilation CD

Valley songwriter Loren Halloran is included in the second Songwriters of British Columbia CD.

Valley songwriter Loren Halloran is included in the second Songwriters of British Columbia CD released this month.

Halloran joins the showcase of B.C. talent with two songs that he wrote and recorded in the Cowichan Valley: ‘Highway of Tears’ and ‘Swept Away’.

Both gained notoriety in the north west of the province and the Cowichan Valley in 2014.

‘Highway of Tears’ was written for the missing and murdered woman from the years 1969 to 2011 from Highway 16 that runs from Prince George to Prince Rupert.

‘Swept Away’ was written in memory of the late Karrie Ann Stone when she was found murdered in Duncan close to seven years ago.

Both songs are also played during the annual Dec. 6 memorial for the 14 female students who were gunned down at École Polytechnique University in Montreal in 1989.

Songwriters of BC is not an association or formal club. It is musicians from all over the province getting more exposure from networking their love for songwriting.

The musicians selected for this project live in Dawson Creek, Chetwynd, Prince George, Quesnel, Williams Lake, Mission and Duncan.

Halloran is offering to donate half of his proceeds made from the sales of the CDs to Women Against Violence Against Women in Duncan.

Andrea Maertz, Halloran’s boss and store manager of Duncan Superstore has offered to make an in-kind donation to the same organization, citing the never ending need for awareness and support for the cause in the community
