Creative artists display wearable art

Comox Valley Art Gallery would like to congratulate the cast of this year’s CVAG Wearable Art Show and announce award recipients.

Comox Valley Art Gallery would like to congratulate the cast of this year’s CVAG Wearable Art Show and announce award recipients.

Audiences were amazed recently by the creative talents of artists and performers from Qualicum Beach to Alert Bay, with the majority of entries from the Comox Valley.

The show ran for three nights in which audiences could vote for their favourite entry.  The closing night celebrated the accomplishments of the cast with a wine and cheese reception.

This year’s judges were Kymme Patrick, owner/creative director of TheatreWorks; Dita Runkle, an accomplished weaver and dyer and an expert in garment construction who has taught weaving and dyeing courses at NIC; and Bill Bate, a 2011 Courtenay mayoral candidate and regular donor to CVAG as well as a current board member.

The Audience Choice Award (by vote, tally of all three nights) went to Every Cloud Has a Silver Lining, created by Roberta Ling and performed by Tamara Ling. This piece began as a cloud and transformed through a musical thundershower into a silvery gown.

The Outstanding Performance Award went to Oil Spill Oil Slick, created by Kari Glass and performed by Millie Miller. It paid tribute to 10-year-old Ta’Kaiya Blaney and her song Shallow Waters, which is concerned with the environment, especially the preservation of marine and coastal wildlife.

The Best Use of Recycled Materials Award went to Bickle Dress, created out of recycled bicycle tire tube and bike parts by Amanda Smetana and performed by Yvonne Yule.

The WOW Factor Award was presented to Every Cloud Has a Silver Lining, created by Roberta Ling and performed by Tamara Ling.

The Outstanding Use of Text or Literature Award was given to Rock, Paper, and Scissors, a humorous take on the age old game, created and performed by Joanne Pringle.

The Outstanding Use of Textiles Award was presented to Medea and the Recycled Golden Fleece, created by Kari Glass and performed by Millie Miller. This piece explored a Greek myth with colourful layers of textiles and unusual materials such as plastic, metal, and duct tape.

If you attended the show and would like to get involved or be in the show next year, get in touch with the team at the Comox Valley Art Gallery.
