It was another outstanding evening for the Creative Roots gang last Saturday as members of the group showcased their work in a broad range of dance styles.
Dancers glided across the stage, leaped in the air, twirled and twisted, stepped lightly and high. It seemed like every kind of step or move possible was on display.
Perhaps most notable was the athletic prowess and ability that some of the maneuvers required. One was reminded of gymnastic floor routines with all of their strength, power, balance and flexibility.
It was a demonstration of the fact that dance is not just flitting across the floor with a couple of smiles thrown in for good measure. It was a demonstration of the hard work and dedication that these youngsters put forth the same as an athlete does.

The variety of styles was almost mind boggling. Each short routine was quickly followed by the next. There were multiple costume changes and in many cases different types of footwear depending on the dance style. The backstage staff did an incredible job of making the whole exhibition run seamlessly.
There were solos, duos, small groups and a grand finale that seemed right out of a Broadway musical.
There was jazz and tap, lyrical and acro. There was contemporary. There were unfamiliar forms that engaged the audience and brought forth cheers and applause.
The performance was designed to raise some funds for the dancers who will soon be travelling around northern B.C. to a variety of contests. It was also a chance to experience the various pressures and excitements that come with performing in front of a live audience.
The two-part show featured a total of 26 dance pieces in front of a very appreciative crowd.
In addition, there was a live performance by a piano duet. The old standard Stay with Me was played in by Solange Stewart-Hansen and Emma Torunski, who are students of the Broadway Music Studio.

It was a delightful way to spend a snowy winter’s night that might have been spent much less enjoyably in front of a TV screen.
