Juno and Grammy-nominated, Cuban-Canadian singer-songwriter Adonis Puentes returns to the west coast of B.C. to perform an exclusive show.

He will be joined by special guest Valentin Puentes, Adonis’ father and guitarist, who is visiting from Cuba on Sept. 28 at the Sid Williams Theatre at 7:30 p.m.

The Puentes’ will be backed by a full band of fellow Cuban musicians who reside in B.C. The show will include Puentes’ original compositions along with traditional music of Cuba (Buena Vista Social Club, Maria Teresa Vera). This will make for a blazing night of Afro-Cuban Rhythms.

Adonis Puentes, born into an atmosphere charged with Cuban sounds, was drawn to music at a young age, by his father’s guitar playing and growing up in a house across the street from his hometown of Artemisa’s Cultural Centre.

At the age of six, Adonis joined a children’s guitar ensemble formed by his father, and by the time he was 14 he was singing and writing his own music. In 1998, Adonis moved to Canada where he continues to compose, sing and perform internationally staying true to his Cuban roots with a contemporary feeling.

Valentin Puentes descends from a musical family in Cuba and has been playing guitar since a very young age. He is the father of Adonis Puentes and Alex Cuba, who are now well known internationally for their musical talents after starting to play guitar at the age of six with the guidance of their father.

Valentin studied music education in Havana, Cuba, and has been teaching for more than 40 years, leading numerous children’s guitar ensembles and keeping the Cuban tradition of music alive. In 2015, Valentin was recognized nationally in Cuba, receiving the ‘Orden por la Cultura Nacional’ (the national order of culture).
