Dance company holds auditions

NANAIMO – Dancestreams Youth Dance Company is offering the opportunity for focused young dancers age 13 and older to join the group

Dancestreams Youth Dance Company is offering the opportunity for focused young dancers age 13 and older to join the group.

Dancestreams is an enrichment program, providing six hours of intensive classes and workshops every Sunday from September to May, culminating in a variety of performances.

Master class and audition with guest teacher Kathy Lang takes place Sunday (Sept. 8) at Vibrant Studio. Cost is $15.   Registration begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by a modern dance class from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. More info at www.dancestreams.ca.

Students may follow in the footsteps of those such as Jee Lam, who started dancing in Nanaimo and went on to work with professional choreographers in Europe.

“It was an experience of a lifetime and one that would not have been possible if it weren’t for Dancestreams,” Lam said.

Returning to Canada, Jee took a brief hiatus from the contemporary world of dance, and discovered a love of salsa dancing.

This consequently led her to Vancouver and  back to her contemporary roots, dancing with Lamondance, a pre-professional training company in North Vancouver.  Lamondance recently toured to Brazil to perform in the opening and closing galas of the International Dance Seminar of Brasilia.

As invited guest artists, the dancers were given permission to take part in the classes that were offered to the participants of the seminar. What followed were three weeks of intense classes, long hours, inspiring performances, and an introduction to dancers from another culture.

With the motivation given to her by the dancers of Brazil, Lam left, ready to begin her next adventure – attending the Alonzo King LINES Ballet Training Program in San Francisco.
