A Canadian contemporary dance legend is coming to Parskville to teach a dance class tonight.

Peggy Baker is in town to perform Coalesce & Armour at the Port Theatre Jan. 18, billed as an audio action tour.

Baker is considered a Canadian icon by many. She received the Governor General’s Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2009, the 2006 Premier’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, the Order of Canada, the Order of Ontario, a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and many other prestigious awards.

Coalesce and Armour are companion pieces, both performed in one evening. The show is inspired by the scientific essays of Lewis Thomas in his 70s classic The Lives of a Cell, and performed to an original electro-acoustic score by Debashis Sinha.

Tickets are $32 for general admission.

Baker and her team of dancers are also teaching some classes in Nanaimo and Parksville. In Parksville Baker will teach a class called Modern Moves Made Easy at Living Well Body Works Studio in Coombs. This happens tonight, Tuesday, Jan. 14 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. It is adult dance for all levels.

That same evening Sarah Morimoto, a graduate of Canada’s National Ballet School and who has worked with Baker for the past 14 years, will teach Pilates With Dance In Mind, also for adults of all levels. That will happen from 7:45 to 8:45 at the same location.

The classes are $17 each. Living Well Body Works Studio is located at 2701 Alberni Hwy. in Coombs. Register by calling 250-607-9642.
