The flower of Scotland is blooming in the Cowichan Valley with news there will be another ceilidh (pronounced cay-ley) in Cedar.

A ceilidh in an informal and entertaining get together that started in the rural countryside of Scotland.

“Somebody would just say, ‘Saturday night, our house,’ and 30 or 40 people would gather in the kitchen and they would sing and play music,” said Kenn Joubert, the event organizer.

“It was a very fun and cheap evening.”

Kenn Joubert of Cedar-by-the-Sea has formed a committee to organize a Scottish Ceilidh for Friday, Jan. 28 from 7 p.m. to 10.30 p.m. to be held at the Cedar Heritage Centre (next to the Cedar High School).

Highland dancers from the Nanaimo Scottish Country Dancing group, will be on hand to teach different dances to the crowd and the audience will then have the chance to try it.

“They will pick dances you can do very easily,” said Joubert.

There will also be a Scottish joke-telling contest with prizes for the best, funniest, clean, Scottish jokes, said Joubert.

Tickets for the ceilidh cost $10 and will be available at the door. Get there early as space is limited.

Money raised will go towards a skatepark in Cedar.

Coffee and tea will be served and while the original may have included some extra ‘spirits’ the Cedar ceilidh is a dry event.
