Davis: Exodus movie on the grand scale

Only a director like Ridley Scott would attempt a remake of the Exodus tale.

Making a movie is really hard. Making a religious epic is even harder.

To go one step further, making a religious epic based on a story that was already made into one of the most revered religious epics in movie history, only a director like Ridley Scott would attempt it.

Scott and Bale

On top of the comparisons to The Ten Commandments starring Charlton Heston, Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Kings will undergo scrutiny from billions of people who are familiar with the story of Moses from the Bible, the Torah and the Qur’an.

There are few directors with the marquee power that could attempt it.

Steven Spielberg was going to make his own movie based upon The Exodus at one point.

But as the man behind Alien, Blade Runner, Thelma and Louise, Black Hawk Down and his own classic religious epic, Gladiator, Scott would be the one to try.

In this retelling of the story of Moses, who rises up against Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses and leads 600,000 slaves on a monumental escape from Egypt, Scott uses state-of-the-art special effects and 3D hoping to give audiences an immersive experience.

He also brought star power with Christian Bale starring as Moses and Joel Edgerton (Zero Dark Thirty) as Ramses as well as Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), Sigourney Weaver, John Turturro and Ben Kingsley.

Exodus: Gods and Kings will likely not become a classic like The Ten Commandments or even his own Gladiator have become but it may see moderate success.  Earlier this year, director Darren Aranofsky braved the scrutiny and delivered the relatively successful Noah starring Cameron Crowe.
