This weekend, The Expendables 3 might seem to be the obvious box office winner, especially considering the even larger number of big name stars in it.
However, an upset could be pulled off by the comedy Let’s Be Cops. It stars Damon Wayans Jr. and Jake M. Johnson (both are stars of the TV show New Girl) in what looks like a buddy-cop movie with a twist—neither are actually cops. The two struggling actors dress as police officers for a costume party, they become neighbourhood sensations. But when these newly-minted “heroes” get tangled in a real life web of mobsters and dirty detectives, they must put their fake badges on the line. It could be a surprise hit because it is coming out around the same time as last year’s sleeper comedy We’re the Millers.
Like the previous outings, The Expendables 3 builds on the all-star cast, with so many actors featured in the poster, comedian Bill Maher joked that it looked like a Where’s Waldo picture. Here is the cast list (deep breath): Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Antonio Banderas, Jet Li, Wesley Snipes, Dolph Lundgren, Kelsey Grammer, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Kellan Lutz, Ronda Rousey, Glen Powell, Victor Ortiz, Robert Davi, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford and Arnold Schwarzenegger. This one has the ever-expanding mercenary team come into conflict with a ruthless arms dealer who is not only one of the co-founders of The Expendables, but is also determined to destroy them.
The Giver is yet another futuristic movie based upon a young adult novel and has been a project star Jeff Bridges has wanted to bring to the big screen for a number of years. He managed to get director Philip Noyce (Salt, Patriot Games) behind the camera and also recruited Meryl Streep, Taylor Swift and Katie Holmes to co-star. In a perfect world where there is no conflict, racism or sickness, every member of society has a specific role and 23-year-old Jonas is selected to be the Receiver of Memory. However, while uncovering the truth behind his world’s past, he discovers that his forefathers gave up humanity in order to have a stable society.
