With the star power of Johnny Depp, it would seem that Transcendence would be the top movie this weekend. However, with the success of faith-based movies like Son of God, God’s Not Dead and even Noah, Heaven is for Real could end up being the number one movie by the end of the Easter weekend.
In Transcendence, Depp plays a controversial scientist who is a leader in artificial intelligence (A.I.) and is working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions.
His experiments have made him famous but when anti-technology extremists target him, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed and have his consciousness become the A.I. he was trying to create.
However, he could become everyone’s worst nightmare as his thirst for knowledge evolves into a quest for power that may make him omnipresent and unstoppable.
Transcendence also stars Morgan Freeman, Paul Bettany, Rebecca Hall and Kate Mara.
Heaven is for Real is based upon the book by pastor Todd Burpo which documents his four-year-old son Colton’s near-death experience after which he describes events and people that seemed impossible for him to have seen or met.
In the movie, Burpo is portrayed by Academy Award-nominee Greg Kinnear and is directed by Randall Wallace, whose previous efforts include We Were Soldiers and Secretariat.
Also opening this weekend is the latest documentary from Disneynature called Bears. As the title indicates, it is about a year in the life of two mother grizzly bears as they impart life lessons to their impressionable young cubs, set in the majestic backdrop of Alaska.
Narrated by Academy Award-nominee John C. Reilly, it is directed by Alastair Fothergill and Keith Scholey, the team behind another Disneynature documentary African Cats.
And just in time for Easter, Ricky, Julian and Bubbles are back in Trailer Park Boys: Don’t Legalize It.
Of course, the trio are looking at another get rich quick scheme but Ricky’s dope growing business is under a major threat when the government announces a plan to legalize marijuana, so he heads to Ottawa to make an impassioned plea: “Say No to Decriminalization.”
