Something I love about working in the arts is just how open ended the term “arts” really is.
I mean, every show is already wildly different from the next, and what’s even more fascinating is that each different show can create such a spectrum of meaning from one person to the next.
In the days after a show, it’s great to compare notes and see what others have to say about it.
Impressions or highlights are almost always different. After all, each of us brings our own life experience to a show that we attend; and it’s up to us to connect with what’s happening on stage in however we see fit.
To that end, it’s not uncommon for us to make profound personal connections with the art which make our experiences entirely unique.
As we’re heading into February, the new year deep-freeze is starting to thaw and we’re seeing more events popping up on the calendar:
The 51st annual Vernon Winter Carnival is set to begin in the coming weeks and the annual proclamation of Queen Silver Star continues to be a crowd favourite tradition to kick off the festivities.
On Thursday, Feb. 3 we’ll find out who is the 51st Queen Silver Star at the proclamation event at the Performing Arts Centre starting at 7 p.m.
It’s a great way to get into the carnival spirit for Cooking With Carnival, taking place from Feb. 4 to 13.
Tickets for the proclamation can be purchased from the Ticket Seller box office by calling 549-SHOW (7469).
On Saturday, Feb. 5, four comedians take the stage as part of the Snowed In Comedy Tour starting at 8:30 p.m.
Don’t miss the hysterical antics of Phil Nichol, Dan Quinn, Craig Campbell, and Peter Kelamis who are touring British Columbia’s ski-resort towns snowboarding by day and on stage by night.
This year’s event is being hosted by the Vernon Chamber of Commerce for the Vernon Winter Carnival. Call the Ticket Seller at 549-SHOW for your tickets.
And tonight at 7 p.m., the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra is back at the centre joined on stage by the UBC Opera Ensemble for Viennese Waltz.
The concert features selections from composers Franz Lehar and Johann Strauss and tickets can be purchased by calling the Ticket Seller at 549-SHOW (7469).
So go out and enjoy the performances. When the curtain call is over, take just a moment to listen to what’s being said around you. It’s all part of this bottomless definition of the arts.
