This winter and spring the Museum has been hosting its Diamond Anniversary Lecture Series in celebration of the Museum’s 60th Anniversary. May 26 will mark the conclusion of the lecture series with a talk by historian and author Richard Mackie.
“The success of the lecture series has exceeded our expectations,” explains Museum Public Program Manager Ken Blackburn. “I think overall the quality and diversity of talks has been excellent, and I have no doubt Richard Mackie’s talk will provide a strong conclusion for the series.”
Richard Mackie is the author of several books on logging history, including Mountain Timber: The Comox Logging Company in the Vancouver Island Mountains (Sono Nis Press, 2009), and Island Timber: A Social History of the Comox Logging Company, Vancouver Island (Sono Nis Press, 2000). He has written and edited several other books, and is the editor of The Ormsby Review, an online journal about B.C. books and authors.
In 2014 Richard Mackie gave the Haig-Brown Memorial Lecture, and ever since he has continued to have an interest in the life of Roderick Haig-Brown. In his research, he has found that Haig-Brown seems to have been influenced profoundly by the riverkeeper on the Frome River at his grandfather’s estate in England. Some of the propriety and aesthetic sense he developed on the Frome he then transferred to the Nimpkish and Campbell Rivers.
Mackie’s talk is entitled “Roderick Haig-Brown: Western Riverkeeper,” and will take place on Saturday May 26 from 1-2:30 p.m. The cost of the lecture is $7 per person.
