Pacific Edge Chorus growing strong at 50 years young

Pacific Edge Chorus is offering an opportunity to share the joy of singing sans instruments.

The group is hosting a free six-week course on a cappella, which is Italian for “in the name of the chapel.” The course, which is open to females from 12 years of age and older, provides voice lessons, music and learning tracks for two songs, and involvement in either partial or full rehearsals. Participants may also have the opportunity to perform with Pacific Edge Chorus in a concert on Oct. 29.

Pacific Edge Chorus director Julie Smith said the aim is to involve women in a style of music that’s a lot of fun. “We hope to draw a wide range of ages as well,” she added. The group, which has been around for 50 years, were formerly known as the City of Gardens Chorus. The new name better reflects the many members from Langford and up Island, Smith explained. Pacific Edge Chorus recently completed a tour of the United Kingdom that began with a performance in Edinburgh and ended in Dublin. One of the highlights was singing on the ferry to west Wales on Canada Day, Smith noted. This year’s trip marked the second time the chorus has toured in the U.K.

The first session is Tuesday, Sept. 12 from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m. at Gordon United Church at 935 Goldstream Ave. in Langford. Please note there is no session scheduled for Oct. 10. Email cogbass@gmail.com to register or for more information. For more on the group, visit pacificedgechorus.ca.
