Marty McFly, Doc Brown and Biff will be back on the big screen helping Fortis B.C. raise money next week for Nanaimo’s food bank.

Fortis B.C. and Fresh Air Cinema have been holding fundraising drive-in movie events across the province during the COVID-19 pandemic, and Back to the Future will be screened Thursday, Aug. 13 and Trolls 2 on Friday, Aug. 14 at Woodgrove Centre. Both movies begin at 8:30 p.m.

Admission is by donation and all proceeds will go to Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank, with Coastal Community Credit Union matching fundraising amounts to a maximum of $2,000.

Physical distancing rules will be followed and there will be a 50-vehicle maximum for each movie.

The pandemic has affected employment and the economy and organizers say one of the reasons for the fundraising events is to provide fun for families.

“The joy of cinema has given families an opportunity to spend time with friends and loved ones with our vehicle events providing a fun and safe opportunity to enjoy the events they miss most this summer,” said Jason Bashnick, Fresh Air Cinema managing director, in the press release.

“While we typically use these opportunities to speak with people about energy conservation, we just want to focus on helping to provide a great opportunity for families to enjoy time together in a safe manner,” said Alicia Hearn, Fortis B.C. program manager of conservation education and outreach.
