At 14 years old, Ioana Gandrabur became the youngest person to win the Romanian National Guitar Competition.
She had only learned to play the guitar two years earlier.
She was drawn to music because it is a language everyone can relate to.
“You can be immersed in a language that isn’t words,” she said. “I can tell the story and every one can do their own story.”
The musician now lives in Montreal and is coming to Nanaimo to perform with her friend Elizabeth Herman.
The two have never performed together before. Herman has done about 20 years of choral singing.
The duo will perform baroque to 20th century music, including works by Dowland, Bach, Guiliani and Barrios.
They chose songs that would complement both Gandrabur’s guitar skills and Herman’s soprano singing.
During the concert the two will perform solos and duets.
“It’s an intimate evening and will be a warm atmosphere,” said Gandrabur.
The concert is Sunday (June 2) at 7 p.m. at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, located at 100 Chapel St. Tickets are $15 at the door.
