Ellison’s Cafe in Nelson has announced its season-opening lineup, and organizer Norman Richard said he’s thrilled to showcase Kiva Simova and Cougars in America on Saturday, Oct. 31 from 1 to 3 p.m.
“Our first performer is Kiva Simova, who recently moved here and is internationally known as one of the leading experts in advanced overtone singing (pitches simultaneously),” said Richard.
“She is a former member of the Wyrd Sisters and world tour member with supergroup Crash Test Dummies in their heyday.”
Simova has three solo CDs, has taught overtone singing globally (directing her own choir in Prague) and performed in festivals in the Czech Republic, Finland, Albania, Romania, India and many other places.
“You will hear selections from her 3 CDs, ranging from jazzy pop to unclassifiable,” said Richard. “Along with image-rich lyrics, some ‘vocalese’ with overtones. Hear the biggest hit ‘Regret’, a heart-wrenching anthem on the mistakes of humanity through history.”
Alt folk duo Cougars in America will follow her.
“You can expect some folk, blues, indie rock and storytelling,” he said.
“Armed with his guitar, harmonicas, and voice, he creates an atmosphere that is intimate, sincere and overwhelming. His music has been compared to Bonnie Prince Billy or Sufjan Stevens.”
He will be joined on stage by Erik Shoepen on mandolin, lap steel.
This story will appear in the Friday issue of the West Kootenay Advertiser.
