The Monashee Arts Council continues its innovative offerings of art classes and workshops into April with new courses.

Following this weekend’s workshop on Altered Books: Journaling with Collage and Paint workshop, facilitated by instructor Rosalie Williams, the MAC is offering a three-day workshop entitled Women’s Spirit Theatre, which will run April 13, 20, and 27 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Presented by Leda Cedar, the goal of the workshop is to make tangible the struggles of women as an oppressed population, and engage the community in learning this creative approach to facilitating community dialogue, said Jennifer Greenwood, arts and culture program coordinator for the Monashee Arts Council.

Cedar will facilitate the method she has learned through Theater for Living director David Diamond and teach participants to develop images, voice and movement to represent authentic concerns.

“Her overall objective is to reach local women who are seeking deeper self and life understanding, and perhaps solutions for achieving social justice for themselves,” said Greenwood.

After the first couple of classes, which will be filled with fun activities, participants will work in groups to make images that depict their concern and give them authentic movement with voice.

“Participants will focus on what concerns them in the scope of social justice issues,” said Cedar.

Registration is required for this workshop by noon Thursday at the Monashee Arts Council office.

The council is also offering the  Earth Arts – Medicine Pouch workshop Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Local artist and entrepreneur Suzan Purdy is taking time away from her studio at Blue Mountain Tannery to facilitate this one-evening class on creating a traditional medicine pouch.

“Students will learn how to fashion a mystical medicine pouch using traditional materials and methods,” said Greenwood. “Most often made of leather, a medicine pouch contains special items meaningful to the person who wears it such as a crystal for clarity, or a coin for prosperity.”

Registration is required by noon on Tuesday through the MAC office.
