The Christmas spirit is in full swing at the Enderby Evangelical Chapel as the church’s drama team and choir are in their final week of preparation to stage A Soldier and a King.
The musical is part of the chapel’s Christmas pageant, Sunday, and includes a 22-voice children’s choir, with voice, piano, violin and dance solos.
Written and directed by Gerty Shipmaker, the story follows the traditional Christmas story of the birth of Christ from the perspective of a Roman soldier, played by Ryan White.
He and his fellow soldier (Steven Stankoven) are in Bethlehem as Mary (Alyse Nicks) and Joseph (Michael Tualk) arrive. They witness the couple looking for a room and then interact with the shepherds and wise men as they come to see the newborn king.
Interspersed with the drama are 13 pieces of music, under the direction of local music teacher Ruth Anne MacKnee.
Two performances of A Soldier and a King take place Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. at the Enderby Evangelical Chapel, 708 Mill Ave. Admission is free.
