Kids Can Cook
Kids Can Cook Fraser Valley is taking place on Saturday, Aug. 6 and again on Saturday, Aug. 20.
Introduce your youngsters aged 9 to 14 to cooking healthy tasty food with teacher and personal chef Marianne Honeywell and registered dietitian Vesanto Melina. Classes include a morning snack and lunch. Register email vesanto@nutrispeak.com or call 604-888-8713.

Heritage Day
Heritage Day is taking place on Sunday, Aug. 7 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Straiton Community Hall, 4698 Upper Sumas Mtn.
There will be pioneer gadgets to try out at 11 a.m. and a history display.
Refreshments will start at 11:30 a.m. At 1 p.m. there will be entertainment and Ray Silver will be the First Nations speaker. There will be reasonably priced lunch and free coffee, tea and lemonade.

Author at House of James
Author Ginny Yttrup will be at the House of James, 2743 Emerson Street, to sign her book on Saturday, Aug. 13 at 10 a.m.
While at the store she will be giving a short talk, where she will share her history of healing from abuse and how that intersected with her writing.
Yttrup is an accomplished freelance writer, speaker, and life coach who also ministers to women wounded by sexual trauma.

Aug. 14
Jazz Trio
Project Walrus, a modern jazz trio composed of Nico Rhodes, Alicia Murray, and Eugene Burton, is playing at Chapleo’s Coffee Bistro, 2070 Sumas Way, on Sunday, Aug. 14.
The performance runs from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. and is free to all ages.

Outdoor movie
Abbotsford Rotary Stadium, 32470 Haida Dr., is hosting a free flick on a three-storey high big-screen on Friday, Aug. 19.
The event is free, but donations will be accepted on behalf of a local charity. Families that attend are encouraged to bring blankets.
The movie that is being shown is ET, and starts at dusk.

The Reach Literary Café
An evening of poetry, literature and music comes to The Reach on Friday, Aug. 19 for The Reach Literary Cafe.
The event will feature young, local and emerging writers sharing the stage in celebration of their work in the UFV and Anvil Press publication, Making Waves: Reading BC and Pacific Northwest Literature.
Readers include Chelsea Thornton, Paul Falardeau and Frances Cabahug.
The musical guests are Franklyn Currie and Cale Stanage
The show will take place at The Reach Gallery Museum, 32388 Veterans Way, and starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $12, $10 for students and are on sale at The Reach.

Whatcom Symphony Orchestra open auditions
Open auditions for positions in the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra, an all-volunteer orchestra, will be held on August 29 and 30 2011 at Garden Street Methodist Church in Bellingham.
There are openings for viola, bass, and subs in all other sections.
