Jazz encompasses may genres – as an art form it’s about 100 years old, ranging from the early “jass” to today’s most abstract electronic music.
The Georgia Straight Jazz Society attempts to offer a wide range of music styles: much like experiencing different forms of painting in a gallery. There are times when we’re told that, “I don’t like this or that form of jazz”, and all we can do is point out that most people have personal preferences and we can’t meet all tastes every time.
Such is not the case with this week’s show: Latin jazz.
Many are probably asked for Latin music more than any other, and Thursday evening will demonstrate why, when La Familia takes The Avalanche Bar stage at 7:30 p.m. For those who enjoy the sounds and rhythms of Latin jazz – this is your night.
Join this amazing band for some cumbia, salsa and merengue with music from Santana, Gypsy Kings, Buena Vista Social Club, Mana and Carlos Vives, plus a whole lot more. Admission is $10 for members and $12 for non-members.
Note: ticket sales have been brisk for Maureen Washington’s Christmas Show on Dec. 20, and at press time it’s unsure whether they will still be available. Please check with Bop City (250 338 6621) to see if there are any unsold.
Full information about the Society’s upcoming concerts (to the beginning of 2019) can be seen at www.georgiastraightjazz.com by clicking on the Calendar tab.
