Fair Trade Trio returns to champion work of living female composers

Friday's concert at St. Mary's Church at 7 p.m.

The performers of the first Summer Serenade concert two years ago, the Fair Trade Trio from New York, look forward to presenting their latest program in a return gig to Oak Bay.

“We are so excited to be returning to Oak Bay as the second stop of our tour of the Pacific Northwest. With members of the trio also having family in Vancouver, Seattle and Portland, this tour feels like a big family reunion” said Ashley Windle, the violinist of the group, who also has fond memories of studying at the University of Victoria. “I went to UVic for two amazing years and I’m happy to reconnect with friends and family in Victoria”, she said.

Together with Hannah Levinson (viola), and Jeanette Stenson (cello), the Fair Trade Trio specializes in creating accessible performances for all audiences. The trio’s mission, to champion the works of living female composers alongside the standard chamber music canon, is part and parcel of Friday’s concert. With music by Beethoven, Ernő Dohnányi, a recent work by Molly Herron and a new work by Canadian composer Emily Doolittle, the trio strikes the perfect balance between traditional and current music for strings.

“It’s so great to have this fabulous string trio return to Oak Bay,” said Erik Abbink, director of the Summer Serenade series. “We can appreciate the trio’s progressive programming choices, blending traditional classical masterworks with much more recent music by current female composers; they are essentially redefining what a chamber music concert should sound like in the twenty-first century, and they are very good at it.”

Friday’s concert at St. Mary’s Church (1701 Elgin Rd) starts at 7 p.m. with tickets ($25/$20) available at the door.
