Fanny Bay’s Fat Oyster Reading Series is going digital, for the launch of a book by a local author.
The Saturday, Nov. 14 Zoom meeting will feature Bernice Friesen introducing her novel, Universal Disorder.
The book launch takes place at 7 p.m. Email fat.oyster.fanny.bay@gmail.com to register.
Universal Disorder – aptly named for a 2020 novel – takes the reader into the brilliant and troubled mind of an unforgettable character. Charlie, a failed astrophysicist is so complex and fascinating he will stay with the reader long after completing the book.
“Bernice Friesen’s captivating second novel is equal parts heart-stirring and mind-bending, perfectly balancing the intimate with the cosmic,” said author Jim Bartley.
Friesen grew up in a family of dyslexics, inventors and other divergent minds. Though she began creative life as a visual artist, her books include The Seasons Are Horses, Sex, Death, and Naked Men, and her first novel, The Book of Beasts. This novel was shortlisted for the Rogers Writers Trust of Canada Fiction Award, was a Globe and Mail’s top 100, and won the Saskatchewan Book Award for Fiction. A resident of the Comox Valley, Friesen is a long-time volunteer for the Fat Oyster Reading Series. An accomplished visual artist as well as a writer, she’s the creator of those dazzling Fat Oyster posters seen around the Valley. As well, she’s proven herself to be an engaging and entertaining emcee and reader of her work at Fat Oyster events.
This will be Fat Oyster’s second Zoom launch. Email to register and on the night of the event, Zoom in to an hour of engrossing local literature and talk.
“Universal Disorder is an extraordinary novel about the human psyche and the imperfect, disordered ways that we love each other,” describes publisher, Freehand Books.
And in spite of all, in these disordered times, we’re reminded by this book of the necessity of love.
