Elk Valley residents have an action-packed weekend ahead with three major community events happening over three days.
On Friday, Fernie’s annual summer music festival Wapiti kicks off with performances by Twin Bandit, The Royal Foundry and Shred Kelly with guests Hark Raving Sirens.
Up to 2500 people are expected to attend the two-day event at Annex Park, which is tipped to sellout.
Then on Sunday, Fernie will play host to the Show N’ Shine car show on 2nd Ave and Bippity Boppity Boo Children’s Festival at Rotary Park, coinciding with the weekly Mountain Markets.
Wapiti Music Festival
Now in its eighth year, Wapiti is a celebration of homegrown, independent music and will feature a mix of local and Canadian artists, as well as food and market stalls.
A new addition to the program is a Saturday morning jam session with festival artists.
“It starts at 10 a.m. and will be a loose, fun event that all weekend and Saturday pass holders are welcome to attend,” said festival director Kevin McIsaac.
Other highlights include headliner Wintersleep, a Canadian indie rock outfit based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and local favourites Shred Kelly, who will close on Friday night.
“And finally, Elliott BROOD, who headlined for us in year one is back seven years later,” said McIsaac.
“We’re very excited to see them again.”
This year, seniors and children are required to get their free passes in advance to guarantee their entrance.

Show N’ Shine
Fernie will be transported back in time when Shine N’ Shine returns to the historic downtown on Sunday.
The Fernie Chamber of Commerce will present the 7th annual car show, which will feature cars of all makes, ages and styles, as well as food trucks, vendors and activities.
Registration opens at 10 a.m. and the show kicks off at 11 a.m., with the owner of the winning car walking away with $300 in cash.

Bippity Boppity Boo Children’s Festival
There will be plenty to keep the kids entertained at this year’s Bippity Boppity Boo Children’s Festival.
Circus acts, facepainting and bubble dance parties are among a raft of activities on offer at the free event, which will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday next to the Rotary Park playground.
Festival-goers are encouraged to wear circus-themed costumes and will get free slices of watermelon.
