Festivals Kitimat is already deeply involved in planning for this year’s Canada Day celebrations from their new location downstairs in the City Centre Mall.
Festivals Kitimat coordinator Sara Besler said in addition to already packed list of fun events traditionally offered as part of Canada Day celebrations, a new event has been added which is sure to thrill – two shows by freestyle motocross outfit Global FMX.
On Sunday, June 30, a section of the lower City Centre Mall parking lot will be cordoned off for the two hour-long shows, one at 2 p.m. and another at 4 p.m. There will also be safety talks and a meet-n-greet between shows.
Global FMX is the only production in Canada that features former X-Games athletes, so the show will be a thriller.
Two of the riders, Kris Garwasiuk and Bruce Cook, are two of the world’s top riders with years of experience and are able to execute all the latest freestyle motocross tricks (including the back flip) with ease.
Apart from the motocross show, there will also be a performance on Friday, June 28, by the band 54-40 in the Tamitik Arena, with special guests Kitimat favourites The Rats.
The theme for this year’s Canada Day parade on Monday, July 1, is Canadian Music, so get those creative juices flowing and register your float at the Festivals Kitimat office.
The parade route will be identical to last year, beginning in the Riverlodge parking lot, heading down Columbia and making a left turn onto Kuldo followed by a right turn onto Haisla, from here the floats will continue past the Upper City Centre parking lot and end at Mountainview Square.
As always, the District of Kitimat is working together with the Kinsmen Club of Kitimat to organize all the events over the long weekend.
Besler said the office will be open from now until June 30, from Monday to Friday 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Applications forms for the parade and for vendors are available at the office, as well as a lot of good advice and assistance.
