A show opening for a good cause is coming to the Orchard House Venue this Thursday night.
Fierce and Feminine, a drag show organized by Princess Margaret Secondary School student Husain Sattar, celebrates diversity.
Sattar and his follower organizers wanted to do something big for their graduating year and Pride Month, which is in June, he said.
“It’s for people to understand that femininity is OK, especially where the world is right now where it is a stigmatized thing. It’s a night of being free and carefree and loving life and being yourself and for people to express that and be happy about it.”
The evening will include entertainment by the Okanagan Valley’s popular drag queen Jenna Telz, Penticton’s heels dance program for adults group, Army of Sass and local singer Jessica Singleton. As well, three young Penticton residents are debuting their drag for the first time.
“It’s a night of expressing femininity and being accepting of it,” Sattar added.
With the support of the community and local businesses, money raised from the event will go toward renovating the main floor of the Youth Centre and opening Foundry Penticton, Sattar said.
Foundry Penticton, operated by OneSky Community Resources, aims to unite mental health and substance use, health and social support services under one roof with over 20 local partnering youth organizations.
Local donors have already pledged $1,065,000 toward the $1.2 million goal to complete renovations and open Foundry by June. This fundraiser will provide a giant boost to the last phase of the campaign by raising both money and awareness, Sattar said.
Fierce and Feminine is taking place on May 30 at the Orchard House Venue from 7 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $20 each at Boston Pizza or on Eventbrite. Tickets are also available at the door for $25.
