Film Kicks has announced the rest of the movies that will be shown this season.
Next week, catch Eternity’s Gate, on January 10. The loosely based biography is gathered from scenes based on Vincent van Gogh’s letters, common agreements about events in his life that present as facts, hearsay, and moments that are fictional.
Directed by Julian Schnabel, the movie frames the final years of the artist’s life, highlighting his friendship with Gauguin. Eternity’s Gate was filmed in three locations in France, where van Gogh lived during his final years, and was released in November, 2018. Willem Dafoe stars as van Gogh in this depiction of the artist’s troubled life.
On Thursday, January 24, Finding Your Feet plays at the Golden Cinema. This movie is about a woman named Sandra Abbott, who discovers that her long-time husband is having an affair with her best friend. She moved in with her wildly different sister, and relishes in the change of lifestyle with her free-spirited sibling. The discovery of her cheating husband sends her from middle class into the impoverished inner-city with her sister.
The next film, If Beale Street Could Talk, shows at the cinema on February 7. Set in the early 1970’s, the movie follows the love story of a couple in Harlem. Growing up as friends, Tish Rivers and Alonzo “Fonny” Hunt are engaged when Hunt is arrested for a crime he didn’t commit. Directed by Barry Jenkins, the film was released in the U.S. on Christmas Day, 2018.
Through the Black Spruce is a 2018 Canadian drama film that plays on March 14 at the cinema. Directed by Don McKellar, the movie is an adaptation of Joseph Boyden’s novel by the same name. The movie, shot primarily in Moosonee, Ont., follows the disappearance of a young Cree woman, and the effects it has on the city she lives in, and the town where she’s from. Her twin sister travels to Toronto, where the missing woman lived before she disappeared, and retraces her sibling’s footsteps.
The final movie shows at the cinema on April 4 and features Women at War, a cross between a heartwarming comedy and ecoterrorist suspense. Set in Iceland, a music teacher plans to adopt a little girl, and has her political convictions called into question. Women at War features “delightfully off-the-wall” musical interludes, and shifts between the main character and her mysterious twin sister.
Film Kicks is presented by Kicking Horse Culture, and is curated by volunteers in the community. All of the shows are at the Golden Cinema at 7:30 p.m., and are cash-only for entry. Advance tickets can be purchased at the Art Gallery of Golden.
