Through Black Spruce is a 2018 Canadian drama film, following one woman’s search for her Cree sister who went missing from her home in Moosonee, Ont., when she moved to Toronto, Ont., more than a year ago.
The disappearance of the young woman in Toronto traumatizes her Northern Ontario family, and sends her twin sister on the journey to find her. But, Annie Bird, twin sister to Suzanne, is drawn into her sister’s seductive lifestyle in Toronto while she’s searching.
The film explores the way a young Cree woman’s disappearance traumatizes her family, and Annie is sucked into the duplicitous and dangerous high-fashion world Suzanne became a part of, starting an affair with fast-rising photographer Jesse (Kiowa Gordon), the last photographer still working with Suzanne when things began falling apart. Annie soon realizes her search for Suzanne may jeopardize her own life.
Suzanne’s disappearance causes disrupt in her remote Northern Ontario town she had left years ago, and in the big city where she became a successful model. In Moosonee, a drug dealer believes Suzanne’s uncle knows where she is, and simultaneously her fiercely independent twin is retracing Suzanne’s steps in Toronto.
The 2018 Canadian drama film directed by Don McKellar is an adaptation of Joseph Boyden’s novel Through Black Spruce. The film stars Tantoo Cardinal, Graham Greene, Brandon Oakes, Tanaya Beatty, and Roseanne Supernault, and was shot primarily in Moosonee, Ontario.
Through Black Spruce is heralded as smart and heartfelt, as the characters are forced to venture into strange and uncomfortable worlds in their attempts to keep their family together.
