Saturday, May 4, sees the final concert in the ‘Live At Fanny Bay Hall’ season. The string quartet, Cuarteto Chroma, from Mexico, brings its exciting program to the Hall starting at 7 p.m.

The quartet comprises members Ilya Ivanov, born in Sofia, Bulgaria (violin/viola); Felix Alanis (violin/viola), who obtained his DMA from the University of Houston; Xalapa Symphony Orchestra member Carlos Quijano; and Manuel Cruz (cello), principal cellist with the Orchestra de Musica Popular at the University of Vera Cruz.

They were the top prize winners at the National String Quartet Competition “La Superior” (2017) in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico; the Manuel M. Ponce prize at the Festival de Música de Cámara of Aguascalientes, Mexico; and the first prize winners at the Mateo Oliva National Chamber Music Competition.

This highly versatile group enjoys delving into many forms and genres of music in addition to classical repertoire, including jazz, folk, and electronic.

Chroma is the first graduate quartet in Canada, presently in the String Quartet Program under the Lafayette Quartet at the University of Victoria.

This will be a great finale for the concert series and a great opportunity to spend a pleasant Saturday evening ‘out of town,’ with some wonderful music.

Tickets are $20 in advance, or $22 at the door, available at Laughing Oyster Books in Courtenay, Weinberg’s Good Food in Buckley Bay, and Salish Sea Market in Bowser.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
