Humourist Lorne Elliott brings his unique comedy to the Surrey Arts Centre on Oct. 30.

Lorne Elliott graces the stage the Surrey Arts Centre next week to riff on a variety of diverse topics in his new one-man comedy and music show, The Upside of the Downturn.

With a stage persona that’s a wild-haired mix of crazed intellectual and extravagant jester, Elliott discusses the merits of drinkers versus pot heads as home renovators, the absurdities of counting in French, and his misadventures as a rookie snowboarder in the Rockies.

Elliott’s brand of comedy is highly original, entertaining, and foolish enough to make everybody laugh.

Elliott started performing in 1974 as a folk musician in Eastern Canada, and has since performed from Newfoundland to New York City, from Los Angeles to Australia, and points in between. Along with his unique performance style, it is the timelessness of his material, joined with keen observations of today’s trends that make Elliott’s work so distinctive. For 11 seasons, he was the host of his own weekly CBC Radio Comedy Series titled Madly Off In All Directions. As well as being a humourist, storyteller and musician, Elliott is an award-winning playwright.

The Upside of the Downturn takes place in the Studio Theatre at the Surrey Arts Centre on Oct. 30, 8 p.m.
