Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers is coming to Fort Langley.
The Winnipeg-based band released their 2011 album ‘hans my Lion’ this spring and since that time has achieved plenty with being accepted to showcase at 2011 New Music West in Edmonton, an offer of a spot at NXNE 2011 which the band unfortunately had to decline, brilliant album reviews, winning a coveted first place at the Nimbus Recording School showcase in Vancouver which gave them free studio time and a sold out Winnipeg’s West End Cultural Centre for ‘hans My Lion’ album release on April 16.
The band is presently on their summer tour, which will take them all over three western provinces with one of their B.C. shows in Fort Langley on Tuesday July 26 at the Fort Langley Community Hall.
Flying Fox’s lead singer Jesse Krause grew up in Langley. He was an active member of the music program under the direction of Russ and Deirdre Baird at D.W. Poppy and studied cello with Ian Hampton at the Langley Community Music School. After graduating from D.W. Poppy in 2003, he went on to study music and received his B.A. in music from the Canadian Mennonite University in Winnipeg.
More akin to a musical than even a concept album, Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers’ hans my Lion runs the gamut from maudlin and pensive to bombastic and blustery. It will come as no surprise to the denizens of Winnipeg — where the band hails from — that Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers would take on a project of such a scope. The band previously wrote and performed a rock opera at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival inspired by the Maurice Sendak story Where the Wild Things Are that won the “Best of the Fest” award.
Writing in Vue Weekly, Bryan Birtles said, “Effort is not its own reward, however, but luckily for Flying Fox the album’s effort is matched by its execution. The vocal acrobatics of songwriter Jesse Krause are what stand out on the surface: his voice is expressive and dynamic, nuanced when it needs to be and almost perfectly suited for the frantic cacophony that plays under him but never fights for space.”
Doors open at 8 p.m., with the all-ages show beginning at 8.30, Tuesday, July 26. Tickets at the door are $10.
